PCKA E-NEWS

Willy Hendrickson
February 2008 (No.11)

The New Year begins with our first PCKA meeting on January 31.  The main ‘Hot Topic’ that was shared by those who attended was the Windless 2008 Indoor Festival held at Long Beach Washington on January 19th and 20th.  PCKA members that placed were Scott Davis (sixth), Wayne Turner (eigth), and Dick Curran (tenth).  Don Ostey, Brian Davis and myself (Willy) were some of the Judges for the event.  Sonia Turner was the Field Director.  Bob Wendt was the announcer, and Donna Wendt worked the sound system.  Marla and Ron Miller helped in other facets of the event.  A great turnout by PCKA members for this AKA sanctioned event.
Although Dick placed tenth overall, he placed second in the Experienced Class.  He flew a kite made by Don Ostey, called a Platz Glider that Don had made.  Dick took second by flying ‘mystery ballet’.  In other words, he flew without ever practicing the song before the event!!!!  You can view a You-Tube video of Don flying a Platz Glider kite at this site http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcxlVVZYyfE.  Dick is considering holding a workshop for those interested in building one of these Gliders.  The date is not yet determined.  Here are a couple of pictures of the kite that Dick flew from our meeting.

I believe there will be a full page article in the upcoming issue of Kiting magazine covering the Windless Festival.

Alexa King brought in a ‘Drake’s 9-Cell Arch Box kite (a McAlister Box)’ she recently made from instructions.  Here are some pictures of her final product during her presentation at the meeting.

Dick and Georgean Curran have reserved the Mountain View Lutheran Church gymnasium located at 3505 122nd Ave East, Edgewood, WA 98372 (the same location as the Christmas Dinner) for an indoor fun fly – lesson session on Feb 9 from 1PM to 5PM.

Sam and Cari King will be holding a workshop at the World Kite Museum on April 19th and 20th building a 9ft. Tri-D Delta kite.  The workshop is listed at the Museum’s web page at http://www.worldkitemuseum.com/events-workshops.html .  Here is a picture of Sam and the kite he will be teaching.

The PCKA Calendar has been updated on our Website by Scott Davis.  Check it out for some upcoming dates you might be interested in.  I will also forward any planned or impromptu fun flys you may want to share with others.  Herb Andrews always wants to share with others when a fun fly brews.  In fact, Herb has been receiving inquiries about fun flys on Valentines Day and St. Patricks Day.  I will let you know more when I hear from Herb.  Glenn Austin may have something in the works sometime in June at Ocean Shores.  Nothing set for sure on that yet.

Bob Wendt and me were both re-elected for the 2008 term.  We both imposed term limits on ourselves though, so this will be the last year for both of us as President and Treasurer/Membership Coordinator.  Something to think about for next year.

During the next meeting at the end of this month, we will begin discussion on our annual festival in August along with upcoming workshops and anything else exciting going on in our individual kiting experiences.  More on that agenda as the meeting approaches.
Until then,
Keep ‘em in the air.
